What is Faith Based Counseling?
Ephesians 5:8-10 Now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. (ESV)
All Scripture is God breathed, divinely-inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is the truth about Jesus Christ, who is the Truth. Therefore, the basis for authenticity and legitimacy are based upon God’s revelation of himself and upon His word given to the world in his book, the Bible.
The Bible addresses many presenting issues that answer the question “Why now?” Why now has the client chosen to come to therapy? Usually, some kind of personal pain brings a client to seek outside help. Anxiety, depression, anger, infidelity, grief, relational difficulties and many other issues have very specific verses and biblical concepts that when applied can aid the Christian clients to regain balance through the utilization of scripture.
How’s your quiet time with God going right now? This opening question is an important initial inquiry that gets to the heart of the clients’ current level of functioning. Comparing the clients’ current quiet time habits with previous pattern or with the clients’ desired routine helps to pinpoint just how well the clients can operate.
Often, clients come to therapy at a point where they are ruminating on thoughts of the problem that brought them into counseling. In other words, they are meditating on their problems. Finding a meaningful scripture verse or chapter that meditates on the goodness of God or the ability of God to provide help, are a positive type of meditation that aids the counseled person to make the issue better instead continuing to spiral downward. Understanding that Christian meditation is opening up to God and requesting that He be present is in direct opposition to Eastern religious meditation in which the person attempts to empty out their minds, not fill their thoughts with God’s goodness.
Praying for clients, praying with clients, and guiding clients to have a deeper prayer life are useful tools in Christian counseling. Clients should be led to understand that God hears us when we pray and he is a very present help in times of trouble.
There are many tenants of the Christian faith that work to increase goodwill towards others and improved relationships. In addition, encouraging altruism through service, ministry and helping others are often tools to give purpose and meaning to life.
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Praying for clients, praying with clients, and guiding clients to have a deeper prayer life are useful tools in Christian counseling.
